Mount Hanang is the focal point of the Babati ecotourism project and is located in the Katesh area, land of the semi-nomadic Barabaig tribe, who lives at the foot of the mountain. The Iraqw (aka Mbulu) tribe, who are mainly involved in subsistence and commercial farming in the Hanang district, also inhabits the district. The area is 242 km southwest of Arusha town.
